Circle of Eight
The Circle of Eight is a cabal of mighty wizards based in the Obsidian Citadel in the southern Yatil Mountains, dedicated to maintaining balance in the world, and not allowing any particular nation, power, or faction to gain dominance for an extended period of time. When evil is ascendant, they will side with the good, when good threatens to overwhelm all, they will indirectly support evil. This is reflected in Mordenkainen’s motto: “The world need not be, nor cannot be swallowed by the Abyss or drawn into the Heavens. In so doing, its destruction is assured."
Ironically, the Circle of Eight consists of nine members:- Bigby (Abjuration)
- Bucknard (Enchantment)
- Drawmidj (Conjuration)
- Mordenkainen (Divination)
- Nystul (Necromancy)
- Otiluke (Illusion)
- Otto (Chronomancy)
- Rary (Evocation)
- Tenser (Transmutation)
Mordenkainen and Bigby are often seen as the informal leaders of the cabal, and its most powerful members. They have influence beyond their seeming numbers, as each member has spies, informants, and agents in various parts of the Flanaess, high and low, near and far. There is little that escapes their notice, or is above their subtle (or not-so subtle) influence.
